Bioremediation of Sewage Waste Water using Rhodobacter Capsulatus
نویسنده
چکیده
Rhodobacter capsulatus is a species of purple bacteria, a group of bacteria that can obtain energy through photosynthesis. It has diverse metabolism and therefore it can be used as a potent bioremedial agent. An attempt was therefore made to evaluate its effectiveness in improving the physico-chemical quality of water contaminated with sewage waste. Certain parameters for the assessment of quality of sewage contaminated water were considered, including pH, BOD, nitrates, sulphates, chlorides and ammonia. Parameters were tested before, during and after the bioremedial treatment with Rhodobacter capsulatus A comparison amongst three stages of testing was made, which has been of great help in assessing the bioremedial impact of Rhodobacter capsulatus. The outcome of the study indicates that Rhodobacter capsulatus is a potent bioremedial agent in improving the quality of natural water bodies. It can oxidise the organic load present in the sewage waste, even in the absence of oxygen.

The use of microorganisms to clean up wastewater provides a cheaper alternative to the conventional treatment plant. The efficiency of this method can be improved by the choice of microorganism with the potential of removing contaminants. One such group is photosynthetic bacteria. Rhodobacter capsulatus is a purple non-sulfur bacterium (PNSB) found to be capable of different metabolic activitie...

The study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary Selenium-enriched radish sprouts (Se-RS), Vitamin E (Vit E), and Rhodobacter capsulatus (RC) on immunity, cholesterol concentration, and fatty acid composition in broiler meat. A total of 100 two-week-old male broiler chicks were randomly assigned into five dietary groups: I) Control; II) Se-RS (5 μg/kg Se-RS); III) Se-RS+RC (5 μg/kg ...
متن کاملBioremediation of reject water from anaerobically digested waste water sludge with macroalgae (Ulva lactuca, Chlorophyta).
Phosphorus and biologically active nitrogen are valuable nutrient resources. Bioremediation with macroalgae is a potential means for recovering nutrients from waste streams. In this study, reject water from anaerobically digested sewage sludge was successfully tested as nutrient source for cultivation of the green macroalgae Ulva lactuca. Maximal growth rates of 54.57±2.16% FW d(-1) were achiev...
متن کاملComplete Genome Sequences of Five Bacteriophages That Infect Rhodobacter capsulatus
Five bacteriophages that infect the Rhodobacter capsulatus strain YW1 were isolated from stream water near Bloomington, Illinois, USA. Two distinct genome types are represented in the newly isolated bacteriophages. These genomes are different from other bacteriophage genomes previously described.
متن کاملHeavy Metals in Sewage Treated Effluents: Pollution and Microbial Bioremediation from Arid Regions
Not all heavy metals are toxic. Some at lower concentrations are essential to the physiological status of the organism. Under certain conditions, induced toxicity occurs when the heavy metals are in the form of cations which tends to bind to certain biomolecules, thus becoming toxic to organisms. In many industries, toxic heavy metals such as As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn, are released mainly i...
